Naming Guides

How many names get claimed every single day?

Every day about 15,400 U.S. businesses register, 2,100 trademarks are filed, 33,000 domains are registered, and 800,000 social handles are created. Check your name before it's gone.

Every 24 hours, roughly 15,400 new businesses register in the U.S., 2,100 trademark applications get filed, 33,000 domain names get registered worldwide, and around 800,000 new social media handles are created. The naming landscape gets more crowded every single day.

I pulled these numbers together because founders keep telling me the same story. They spend weeks on a name. They design the logo. They tell their friends. Then they go to register it and someone already owns it. Not a competitor. Just someone, somewhere, who got there first.

Here's the daily damage.

Infographic: daily totals of new business registrations, trademark filings, domain registrations, and social handles created.

~15,400 new businesses registered per day (U.S.)

The U.S. Census Bureau counted 5.6 million business applications filed in 2025. Divide that by 365 and you get about 15,400 new businesses every day. Each one needs a name. Each one files that name with a Secretary of State somewhere. If your name matches one of them in your state, you may not be able to register at all.

~2,100 trademarks filed per day (U.S.)

The USPTO received about 765,000 trademark applications in FY2024. That works out to roughly 2,100 a day. A trademark is the one that can actually hurt you. A registered mark in your class means a rebrand at best and a legal letter at worst. And unlike a domain, you can't buy your way out of it for twelve bucks.

~33,000 domain names registered per day (worldwide)

Verisign's Domain Name Industry Brief tracks about 1 million new domain registrations a month. That's 33,000 a day. Most are junk. But the short, clean, pronounceable ones in .com and .ai are exactly the ones founders want, and they go fast. If your name is good, assume someone else thinks so too.

~800,000 social handles created per day (worldwide)

DataReportal estimates around 294 million new social accounts a year across platforms. Call it 800,000 a day. Handles are the easiest thing to lose and the most annoying to compromise on. A brand with @yourname on one platform and @yourname_official on another looks unfinished before it launches.

What this means if you're naming something

The math is simple. Every day you sit on a name without checking it, tens of thousands of registrations happen that could collide with it. Most won't. It only takes one.

By the time you finish your logo, the name you love may already be taken.

Check before you build

This is the whole reason BrandScreen exists. One search checks your name against live USPTO trademarks, domain availability, registered business entities across five states, social handles, and search competition, then gives you a Brand Score from 0 to 100.

The basic report is free and unlimited. And when you create an account, your first full report is free too. Run it before you order the business cards.
